IT SEEMS LIKE the fates of "2001" and "Apes" have been tied together ever since both premiered in 1968. Ignorant people often confuse the two, because they both have apes, and they're both fancifull stories.
NOW, IN THE YEAR 2001, Tim Burton's remake of "Planet of the Apes" will hit the screens. As if that isn't bizarre enough, there's a third connection between "Apes" and "2001".
ON THE WAY to Trona and with the intrepid Mark Watson driving, neither of us yet knew about this third connection. I looked out at the land to my right...

Chris Dow, who was driving in front of us, commented through the walkie-talkie that it looked like we were gonna have a drought this year.
I looked out at the barren, dessicated landscape, thinking about economic downturns and civilization falling, all in the Year 2001! In my best Charlton Heston voice I said... "Don't worry, in six years we'll have the run of the planet!"
No, they didn't laugh either. But when we arrived at the Trona campsight in the middle of the night, I heard rumors we were on the set to Tim Burton's remake of the Planet of the Apes!
The next morning -December 31st 2000 and one day before THE BIG DAY- the pitch dark of the desert night ended, and we were treated some interesting sights. To our southwaest, we saw this series of metal constructions... seeming like high-tech versions of the scarecrows from the original film, perhaps.
